09 April 2024 John Brown Was a Villain According to some, John Brown is a hero. Is he really a sham? John Brown has been noted to have been noted stating that violence was the only way to end slavery. Does that sound like something a hero would say? John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut on May 9, 1800. He was a Quaker who hated slavery. Throughout most of his life he showed his hatred of slavery through pointed speeches and brutal violence. He led and was a part of many anti-slavery battles. During, after and before some of the battles he kidnapped, murdered, stole, and committed other heinous crimes. John Brown brutally killed many people. He savagely murdered many pro-slavery men just to have an opinion. No matter what opinion someone has or what they believe is right, they have the right to be alive. John Brown took their birth right away. But not only did John Brown kill them. Brown killed them brutally. A quote that supports this is, “Killed five men, hacking at them with broadswords and cutting their throats before shooting them” (Document E 11). This exemplifies the violence and brutality that John Brown used to prove his point. He was cruel and almost unfeeling. But not only was he brutal, he also didn’t care who he was hurting or what side they were on. According to a letter written by Mahala Doyle, John Brown murdered her husband and two sons even though they did not have any enslaved peoples and did not expect to have any enslaved peoples in the future. In the letter written by Mahala Doyle it states, “You can’t say you did it to free our slaves, we had none and never expected to own one” (Document E 11).
