A. I learned a lot of things while i watched the documentary on the MS-13s. They do a lot of things that i never knew people could do. There are so many members in this gang and everyone wants to be higher and higher up each day. A good term from our sociology book that i connected to the documentary was Competition. Competition in biology and sociology, is a contest between two or more organisms, animals, individuals, groups, etc., for territory, a niche, for a location of resources, for resources and goods, for mates, for prestige, for recognition, for awards, for group or social status, or for leadership.
The relationship between the law and society affects everyone and everything. How the law is written and how it is acted upon in society are two different things. It is imperative, therefore, that we as citizens pay attention to and understand the importance of the relationship between the law and society as it affects both our own lives and the lives of those around us. We engage in and witness the power of the law and society everyday. The law is personal, however, the law is also discretionary depending on where you look.

Sociology At the end of ‘’Sociology’’ by Katherine Govier, Ellen isn’t entirely satisfied with the results she got. In fact she will never be completely satisfied, because what she likes the most in her life is to observe others and obtain information about these person. What seems to be her biggest goal in life is to obtain as much information as possible, and the way she acquire this information isn’t a problem. For instance, at the begging of the short story, there is a burglar who decides to steal their belongings, and at some point the thief ask her to give him the ring she is wearing on her finger, and she tells him that she can’t because she’s pregnant. At this moment her first thought is about how she was scared but not like any normal
This has been a trend though, during the late 1600s Maria Sisa and a few other women sued their employer for two years of back wages. Ultimately Sisa and others would not win as the judge believed housing was enough in return for hard work (Sloan 2011). In the 1980s, as a result of a neoliberal influence in Latin America women were forced to pick up jobs that were not deemed suitable for them and work for wages less than men because men were losing wages and jobs. Female labor is undervalued and women are considered a burden in the workforce. If they are unskilled they are thrown out and replaced (Wilson 2014).
The five most important things I have learned throughout my semester in SOC 150 are about crime and perception of social problems, how fines and fees keep people in jails, about mobility and poverty, sexual assault on college campuses, and lastly about the school-to-prison pipeline. During our unit on crime I learned about the perception of a social problem in different parts of the country as well as to a single individual. The two readings about crime, “Crime Rates Have Plummeted” and “U.S. Crime Is Up but Americans Don’t Seem to Have Noticed” demonstrate that crime is a social problem to be interpreted differentially based on the person perceiving the problem. What happens with crime is that crime is more likely to be thought of as a social problem based on what the media is reporting. The media will broadcast the
The “Outsiders” made me think about the rules that groups give us are strongly founded on what they see as defiance. It made me think that some rules are given within a group are not remotely necessary and that we as a society are to blame for what is deemed as “socially acceptable”. Deviants may not even be actually deviants but that’s what they are labeled by society because they think, what the deviant did was wrong, which could be made up by what society thinks is okay behavior. The relation to this reading and the sociology course shows how society controls us and how they consider we should act. It reminded me of how society tells us as women that showing off our body parts is deemed as trashy and not lady like, but men can do so without
Marsha McMillen Unit 5 Sociology Homework Men and women pick their mates in different ways. Some of the groups are the Functionalist Perspective, Conflict Perspective, and the Symbolic Interactionist. Marriage is very stressful, but there are many men and women, that think it is all fun and games. They get married and they believe that it is going to last forever, but then the children come and the fighting begins. Most of those fairytale marriages end in divorce, because they cannot deal with the hard times, the children and the differences that come about after marriage.
In sociology, there are three theoretical perspectives; symbolic interactionism, functional analysis and conflict theory. The major point of symbolic interactionism is to use symbols to help understand how we as a society view the world, and how we communicate with one another. In functional analysis, the major point is to look at society as a whole, constructed of various parts, or groups, that all have their own function. Lastly, conflict theory is the opposite of functional analysis. In this perspective, society is viewed as different groups, each competing for power, or dominance.
Throughout the year we’ve learned and looked upon many different social views. The sociological concepts such as social interaction ,sex and gender, religion, race and ethnicity, and deviance are very important to society and have many social effects. My favorite tv show Law and Order(Special Victims Unit) covers and demonstrates these concepts in majority of the episodes. The show Law and Order consists of real life situations and issues which causes many different societal views or opinions throughout the show. Social interaction is one of the biggest sociological concepts.
The book ‘Classical Sociological Theory; Rediscovering the Promise of Sociology’ by Glen Goodwin and Joseph Scimecca, covers the beginning of the sociology field (Goodwin and Scimecca, 2005). The three main theories of conflict perspective, functionalism and symbolic interactionism beginning have all been developed in the book. After the author’s identify the social philosophy emergence, the book then follows a pattern where every chapter is devoted to a major theorists as well as their work. The theories in this case have been placed in an intellectual and social context. Hegel’s discovery of dialectic gave rise to German sociology.
a. Sociology is the study of the social relationships that affect the humans as well as institutions. It involves many fields of study that include crime, religion, family, race, culture and society among others. It is the primary purpose of sociology to provide linkage to all of these different subjects to help in understanding how humans behave (Smith, 2016). b. Sociological enquiry is the careful analysis of the motivational factors as well as the behavior of a certain individual within a particular group of people. The primary objective of sociological inquiry is to reveal an understanding of the social world that is readily observable.
In introduction to sociology I’ve learned many things about what kind of society we live in. For our final paper, we had to visit three various locations. The first day I visited the college that I’m going to be transferring to, which is New York City College of Technology, known as City Tech. On the second day I was observing the bank tellers in Citibank in Brooklyn New York. On the last day I visited Queen Center Mall.
Classical sociological theories are theories with ambition and great scope that either created in the early 1800s and 1900s in Europe. There were many sociological theorists such as Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Vilfredo Pareto, Auguste Comte, Karl Marx was important in its Time and have played a significant role in the subsequent growth and development of sociology. According to the origins of British Sociology, the market economy is a source of order, positive force, integration and harmony in society. According to Jackson (2014), there was a small elite inevitably dominates society on the grounds of enlightened self-interest. On the other hand, the anomie, considered out of any specific social context, refers to the problems
The exponent of sociological school of jurisprudence considered law as a social phenomenon. The school is principally involved with the connection of law to alternative up to date social establishments. They insist that the jurists ought to focus their attention on social functions and interest served by law instead of on people and their abstract rights. The main concern of sociological jurists is to study the effect of law and society on each other.
