Energy is the lifeblood of manufacturing. It is a top five operating expense for most organizations. At Honeywell, I learned interacting with various business leaders as part of my job that most of them recognize that they pay up to 8% of their total revenue on energy, and that it is a major part of their operating expense, yet most of them pay lip service to managing these cost. Most leaders focused on quarter to quarter while lacking long-term view of profitable growth and transition to a more sustainable energy future, one that meets economic needs while minimizing the impact on the environment.

My experience in energy and sustainable development can be very helpful bring unique perspective in to UNC classroom. In the U.S. we largely take energy for granted because it has been cheap, it’s been abundant and reliable compare to the rest of the world, as a result, we tend to waste it. I have seen the waste firsthand throughout my careers. I have helped organizations save real dollars and help increase their operating profits to achieve real growth. For example, Honeywell was able to provide handsome 12% return to its shareholder between 2008 and 2016 by promoting sustainable solutions, products and services to their Fortune 500 clients.
