The Uniform Crime Report and National Crime Victimization Survey have been and are important factors in the reduction of crime in the United States and safety of the American people. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime report is a report that reflects upon the trends of crime in America every year since 1930. The Uniform Crime Report has shown that the rate of murder and nonnegligent manslaughter had made a significant increase within the three years prior to 2015. While much debate can come about regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s definition of murder and how accurate the report actually is, the Uniform Crime Report of 2015 has proven murder rates are high relative to some previous years. In 2015 there were 15,696 documented murders with a rate of 4.9. Relative to 2006 murder and violent crime rates were significantly lower in 2015. Compared to 2014-2011 murder and violent crime rates have been high. The murder rates of 2015 have not been that high since Table 12 of the 2015 Uniform Crime Report’s murder and nonnegligent manslaughter compare violent crime data from 2014 and 2015 throughout different sized groups. Overall violent crime had made a nearly four percent increase between the two years.While Group 1 has the highest murder count with 6,146. The Group 1 subset (500,000 to 999,999 people) had the greatest increase in murder and nonnegligent manslaughter. The data from both table definitely surprised me in that the murder rate has decreased since 1996. With all the media coverage of mass killings and homicides one would think murder rates are at an all time high.
