The United States Postal Service began under the name Pony Express where men would ride horseback across the country to deliver the mail. Over the years The United States Postal Service (USPS) has had to change and adapt as times changed around them such as when they made the transition from delivering mail solely by horseback to delivering mail partly by train. The USPS has changed with the times since the very creation of it, and the time has come for them again to reconstruct with the changing times. What the USPS is doing now is not keeping them in competition with other companies. They need to begin reconstruction by reconsidering the day's mail is delivered, and forms in which mail is delivered.
The USPS needs to start reconstructing by altering the days that mail is delivered on. The amount of mail delivered by the USPS in 2000 was 208 billion pieces of mail and in 2009 the mail volume dropped to 177 billion pieces of mail (Source B). To compensate for the drop in paper mail many say that USPS needs to cut Saturday mail delivery in order for USPS to stay afloat. The postmaster General John E. The USPS has a monopoly on paper mail but the problem is that more and more people are moving away from paper mail and switching to email. One way to do this according to Watts Wacker is to “Give every American an Email address when they’re born” (Source A). Yes, they may look elsewhere for a different email address, but at least the USPS is on their mind. By getting into the email business, the USPS will create more jobs to maintain the network while also providing jobs for the regular mail people.
