The first focus in the University of Charleston’s mission statement is productive work (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). The University of Charleston define productive work as “trying to contribute a positive improvement or impact to society throughout your life” (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). The LLOs that best help us to achieve this focus are communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Communicating is a very important part of productive work because it lays the basics for strong communication to be built upon. If there is poor communication productive work cannot be achieved. Creativity is another important part of productive work because you can always find a way to be creative in your work. Creativity was taught to me in my public speaking class through unique topics we were assigned to speak on. In class we were encouraged to look at the topics in a creative light and figure out another side that may not have been seen before. Listening and seeing peoples different ideas on topics lead us to learn about another LLO, critical thinking. Critical thinking is, “the process of reflection on the reasoning used by the individual to explain a situation while also being used to examine and explore statements, problems, issues, beliefs and social constraints related to that issue” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018). Critical thinking is important in productive work because you want to try and see all the positives and negatives of the work while trying to also see if anything can be improved upon. In public speaking class we had to use critical thinking to evaluate our classmate’s projects. This class helped me to gain a better understanding of productive work through the LLOs achieved in this course.
