As a psychology major looking to go on to graduate school, one thing available at the University of Wisconsin-Madison that is important to me is the opportunity to get involved in undergraduate research. The psychology department has so many opportunities to get involved, and it is part of the reason I transferred here. If Madison were to all of a sudden cut their funding to research, making it difficult for undergrads to get involved, it would seriously impact my experience as an undergraduate student. It would make me a less appealing candidate for graduate school compared to those who had the opportunity to be involved in research and rob me of the critical skills and learning experiences that come along with the real world application of …show more content…

It is one of the things that makes Madison great, it is one of the reasons so many students from all over the country come here for school, and it is one of the reasons I transferred here as a psychology student. I want to have the opportunity to be involved in research and develop the skills I will need in the future that I cannot learn in a lecture or discussion. If I were to lose that opportunity, I would lose the opportunity to learn those skills. Most people consider college to be the time you prepare for being a successful and productive member of society, and part of that is the acquisition of knowledge and skills applicable to your field of interest. For many students, it is through the combination of instruction and practical experience that they achieve this, and for many students their education is best supplemented through their involvement in research.
A philosophy the University of Wisconsin-Madison holds in high regard is something known as the Wisconsin Idea. The Wisconsin Idea is an idea that works to improve people’s lives through teaching, research, outreach, and public service. The UW systems holds that university research should be beneficial to and for all citizens. Not only does the research here at Madison benefit the general public through researchers’ findings, but also to the students who are able to gain important experiences and critical analytical skills that will benefit them in their future careers and everyday
