Although abortions are very common they come with very serious issues. One of the most difficult issues that is related to abortions is the decision process of whether a woman should have one or not, and who gets to make the decision. Often, the mother’s choice is the only one taken into consideration in these cases. However, just because it’s most common that the mother’s preference makes the decision doesn’t make it morally right. “We must only make a reasonable effort to obtain relevant information, which we can use to determine the likely consequences of our actions. Acting morally doesn’t require anything more than this” (Munson 905). Therefore, by having value there is a duty to the fetus. This duty consists of morality being the principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. Next it consists of preference a form of utilitarianism and entails promoting actions that fulfil the interests of those being involved. Lastly, autonomy is included into the duty of the fetus. If we have a duty to people because they have value, then we have a duty to everyone who is a person. Since, the fetus is a person we must honor that. Kant says “every rational creature has worth in itself” (Munson 912) That worth is inherent in rationality. And each person’s inherent worth is equal to that of the other person. So, as for the mother, she is obligated to treat the father as an equal moral agent. And being that it was established that upon conception a fetus hold moral value, the parents are morally responsible for the fetus so choices concerning the fetus belong to both parties.
