Verbal abuse can be a hard thing for the victim to understand and all they can do is try to listen and to hear out what they are saying. If they even slightly underestimate or deny anything they are saying or question it even if it doesn’t relate back to them they will only go through more abuse just trying to understand why they are being put in that position to begin with. In Safe Haven, she is emotionally abused and the effects are that she has no one she can really go to or talk to about what is going on. He starts arguments with her over little things and that could be because he is drunk or it could just be that is trying to get to her and make her feel as if she is doing something wrong.

The types of physical abuse could be punching, slapping, kicking, throwing objects, pinning you down, pushing, or choking. Physical abuse could occur because the abuser wants power in the relationship, drugs and alcohol, or because he had seen his family abused when he was a kid. Neither of those are an excuse to put someone in that kind of situation and they need serious help but if the victim can’t help them and can’t get anyone to help him then it is only going to end up with them going to prison.
Even if any one of these only occurs one it could be a sign that abuse could occur in the future and it could happen again. That one time it happened could cause the victim to be scared or to be worried because they are not sure what is going to happen to them if that happens again or if becomes a habit. In Safe Haven, he hits the glass off the table, throws her into a shelf, and pulls her hair and shoves her to the ground. The actions he makes are some of the extreme type of abuses. Kevin hits her and chokes her until she can’t breath and she has to stab him just to get him off of her. She had to defend herself otherwise she wouldn’t have survived him choking her. The body could go through trauma because it is constantly getting beaten and if they are getting abused so much the body could be just too weak to even function. Depression could cause them to feel low enough to where they just cry, sleep, and barely even eat. Usually the victims do not run or try to leave because they are afraid if they get caught they might beat them to death.
Katie though was able to stab him to defend herself and run. She had cut her hair, dyed it, and changed her whole identity. She was depressed while she was with him and was scared for him to even be in the same house as her because she knew he was always going to be drinking and that is when he becomes mean. Katie had constantly experienced flashbacks and always had to worry about if he was going to find her and try to kill her.
