Divergent is a young adult fiction novel set in the future. It was written by Veronica Roth. The story is told by the character Beatrice Prior. She begins by explaining the way society works in the book. All of the characters live in the destroyed city of what was once known as Chicago. The people are divided into five groups called factions. The factions are called: Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and Erudite. Each faction is responsible for a certain job or role in the community. Abnegation is the main faction which serves as the government. They are known for being selfless and for serving the poor.
