There are countless names that humans often associate with astonishing achievements. Whether the names may be associated with sporting accomplishments, wars, scientific advancements or art, almost every child knows of them. Van Gogh is among the many of these people. Van Gogh is known worldwide for his inconceivable paintings. Van Gogh was greatly critiqued by the public during his lifetime , however today his paintings are sold for millions of dollars. He didn’t have the social skills required to have a happy person life. He suffered with depression due to disastrous relationships with women. When Van Gogh’s paintings were viewed as exceptional, he lacked the skills to make any sales. Legend has it , he used to argue with buyers, convincing them vigorously that the work wasn’t good! Van Gogh’s reaction to these difficult times demonstrates his biological and physiological instability, alienating himself from others around him. As he began to feel more isolated, he began channelling his energy into painting. During his troubled lifetime, he only managed to sell one of his paintings, titled “the red vineyard”. The roughness of his brushstrokes and the simplicity of his paint colour choices create a child-like feeling to the viewer. Originally, he began painting with dark, dreary colours, until he came across art movements such as impressionism. Once he changed his painting style to a more unique style he painted over 2,000 works. Of these works there were 900 painting and 1,100 drawings and sketches. A majority of these works were created within the last ten years of Van Gogh’s life. ‘Starry Night’ is considered the peak of Van Gogh’s achievements in his lifetime.
