Rutgers University School of Social Work is an intense and competitive program that is well-known for shaping some of the finest and highest skilled social workers today. As an aspiring social worker, I want to attend a MSW program that will challenge and prepare me for a successful career and I know that Rutgers University School of Social Work is the institution that will do just that. As an undergraduate law and justice major, I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in the field of law as a defense attorney. However, when asked why, I was never able to provide an answer.
In fact, I used to be on a track to pursue a career in the medical field. I was enrolled in a vocational high school with a focus on health care, where I took
Doctor of Social Work Program Application Personal Statement Ashley Newberry LCSW, LISW As I child, I was introduced to the human service field in a unique way. For as long as I can remember, my mother has had a human service profession and provided me with daily examples of how to help others. One of my earliest memories is riding out a hurricane while we stayed in the adult group home where my mother worked, assisting with safety measures for residents and providing comfort to her community. My mother worked in multiple residential programs throughout my life, specializing her work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
Throughout my life, I found that I have a passion for helping people. I am going to major in Exercise Science in college. I hope to be accepted into graduate school and earn my DTP. When I earn my DTP, I plan to use my knowledge and my degree to get a job as a physical therapist. I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of young and elderly patients, by helping them live an easier life.
As the Speaker of the House, you are an influential asset to the Michigan House of Representatives and a catalyst for change. I am writing you as an impassioned social work student graduating in April of 2018 who has made it her mission to advance social justice for all and advocate for human rights to be granted to all humans – born and unborn. My field placement for my final two semesters in the Bachelor of Social Work program at Grand Valley State University is at Dickinson Academy, a cultural center elementary school in southeast Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. I have been able to apply what I have learned in course materials and in the classroom to the palpable situations our students and their families are facing.
I feel that I am deserving of this scholarship because of the all time and effort that I have invested in getting myself where I am today. I was taught that to be successful in school and get to where I wanted to go in life I would have to work hard and get good grades. From an early age I have consistently myself to a high standard of maintaining good grades, and I haven't once let my grades get to a point where they kept me from making the Honor Roll. Getting to the point that I'm currently at has not been an easy task. I quickly learned that if I wanted to get good grades I was going to have to put forth the effort to get the grades I wanted, this meant a lot of studying.
Having been a true academic, I aim to fulfil my desire to ensure my soul purpose to do good with my abilities. Marriage and bringing up children has steered me away from any progression in a career within a school which I am now seeking again. I first started working with children in a school in India with children aged 4-5 years providing tuition needs on a one-to-one basis within a classroom environment. Since working in an Indian school, I have practised childcare and enjoyed maintaining this passion as a private venture at my home and as a volunteer at my temple's Sunday school. I have high expectations of behaviour and can maintain control whilst remaining likeable, approachable, and capable of providing children with a fun yet safe
As a child, I dreamed of becoming an attorney in the family law field. The irony of the matter at hand was that my parents had been through a divorce, and I, being the stubborn and open minded child I was, decided I wanted to justify loyal and caring parents. This idea grew in my mind, later blossoming into the career of a guardian ad litem, which is a representative of the child in a divorcing family. Recently, social work has dawned on me as a career opportunity and major. After thorough research of the majors and career choices, I have changed my mindset of law to social work.
The reason I’m interested in pursuing a degree in social work is because, I have always been a person that doesn’t mind giving or helping someone. When I was in high school, I would always give my friends advice to situations that they were dealing with. Up until my adult life, I would see a homeless person alone the roadside, stop dig into my purse and just give whatever I had. I have always had the passion in helping others, I didn’t have much growing up I was raised in the home of a single parent alone with five other kids. During my last two semester of Palm Beach State College, I got the oppuntinnty to do field work in which, I worked with small kids who I helped with different situations and one on one mentoring.
For as long as I can remember, there has always been a pursuit to discover what I wanted to do with my life. I knew I had a deep conviction to help my community from a very young age, as I had witnessed my mother care for the innocent children who had crossed the border and become separated from there families. She is a resident counselor in a government agency, known as His House, inspiring me to want to become an instrument to this society, of both justice and compassion. By the time I entered college, I had a profound interest in philosophy, along with sociology, that eventually I found myself indulged in studying Social Work for the remainder of my undergrad. During my academic career, I maintained a GPA above 3.5, and finished my Associate
Indeed, supporting displaced individuals is a task for us all in this world of uncertainty. In helping other people are connected in varied ways. Persons share cultures and customs through such contacts. Meanwhile, I want to be involved in administering services and activities for refugee for my compassion I have in working with this marginalized group. The experience I have with refugees from the Great Lake region residing in Dzaleka refugee camp can be of significant help in dealing with issues impacting refuges from Mozambique.
At a young age I experienced homelessness. My mother could not afford the rent for our apartment which resulted in us being evicted. It was unpleasant not knowing when things were going to be better and where I was going to lay my head at night. "Every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better". this quote is by Dr. Steve Maraboli.
I have chosen to enter a field blandly labeled the “helping profession”, a cautiously enigmatic description at best. Social work tends to evoke images of a broken desk in a dreary office, with a line of disgruntled patrons trickling down an ill-lit hallway. Although the profession entails far more than this depiction allows, it is not always far from the truth. For instance, I currently work as an administrator at a school in rural India that has grand schemes to end the cycle of poverty in one generation. The school practices an audacious policy, which states that providing children with the highest possible level of education will transform their lives so they can act as a catalyst, therefore alleviating the oppressive constraints of the
I love to volunteer because it is something that I have always loved doing. I also want to spread my name more throughout Houston and along with that be able to give to my city. There's some things that the youth can have their voice in regarding the city. We always want to make sure we have all points of view included in things the city does. I also love working with different people.
I believe that the mission of a student ambassador is to promote the vision, growth and quality of University of Maryland, by optimizing the experience of current students, prospective students and special guests. I would like to be a student ambassador primarily because I want to get more involved with the university; not to mention the positive impact it will have on my CV. I would also gain experience in public speaking, building friendships with fellow ambassadors and develop my leadership skills. Furthermore, this offers a responsibility that can be both challenging and extremely rewarding.
