Walter Elias Disney Across the globe, the name Walt Disney is known for many reasons. Walt also known as Walter Elias Disney was the creator of Mickey Mouse and the designer of Disneyland and Disneyworld. Most importantly he was known as the man who made people all over the world believe that dreams really can come true. “He helped reshape the way America told its history, used its leisure time, spent its money, and thought about itself.” Walt was born to Elias and Flora Disney on December 5, 1901 in Chicago. He is one of five children, Herbert, Raymond, Roy, Walter, and Ruth Disney. In 1906 Walt’s father moved his family from Chicago to Marceline, Missouri and they stayed in Marceline until 1911 when Walt’s father moves his family again, this time to Kansas City. Elias Disney moved the family back to Chicago in 1916, however Walt and Ruth stayed in Kansas City so they could graduate from Benton Grammar School. The summer of 1916 Walt took a summer job working on the Santa Fe Railroad selling newspapers and snacks to travelers. Three years after the end of the war in the summer of 1948 Walt and his friend, Ward Kimball, traveled to the Chicago Railroad Fair and Greenfield Village. Walt was ecstatic about the whole trip and studied the flow of the people, how the food was prepared, and how to entertain and organized a large number of people. On the train home to California Walt sketched up ideas for an amusement park called Mickey Mouse Park.
