I am writing to apply for the summer intern opportunity at Common Ground through Wesleyan University. Spending my summer teaching and working with enthusiastic children will give me the opportunity to lead the young minds of tomorrow. As an undergraduate student, I have always been interested in interacting with children. I have dedicated myself to volunteering three hours a week- through the Wesleyan Science Outreach program- at a local elementary school, teaching them basic science concepts. How can I present the information in a fun, exciting, and relatable manner so that they will enjoy their experiences while retaining the information? This is one question, of many, that I always ask myself while preparing to teach my students. For instance, I found myself continually working on 3-D modeling and moviemaking projects for my high school, as well as for companies that my school was partnered with. However, I realized that if I wanted to create a community where students continue and expound upon the projects that I started, I would have to teach them. I taught incoming high schoolers in a classroom environment as a part of a transition program from middle to high school. To further my passion of teaching, I worked as a 10th Chemistry Teacher’s Assistant tutoring kids on academic material as well as preparing them for state-wide science competitions.
