Multitasking in today's society is popular from texting and driving to listening to music and reading. But is doing two task simultaneously really beneficial? Doing two things at once maybe faster and save some time, but being faster may not be beneficial, proven to be detrimental. You are not actually doing both task simultaneously, instead, you are diverting your attention from one part of your brain to another. The other side of the brain is starting a new activity, so you are actually doing the task slower and most likely slacking on both task by doing two activities at the same time. Multitasking can be beneficial and if used in the right situation, such as occupying your mind while exercising, can actually make you work out harder. But overall multitasking is proven to be detrimental. Multitasking can save time, but also does do more harm than good. When an individual completes a small task such as sending an email, replying to a text message, or posting on social media, they are hit with an abundance of dopamine, our reward hormone. The Brains is attracted to that dopamine, promoting the switching between small tasks that give us instant satisfaction. This creates a harmful feedback loop that makes an individual feel like they have accomplished a lot, when actually they have not. Multitasking has also been found to increase the stress hormone. Constantly shifting tasks builds up stress and tires an individual out, leaving them feeling mentally exhausted.
