The Article “Why Psychology Isn’t Science” dives right into the tension between the scientist and psychologists. The author of this article seems to have a passive aggressive tone when talking about why psychology has no real evidence in its research and especially in its battle to become considered science. He boldly stated it’s not a science and shouldn’t be given the credit that sciences get. He gave the 5 rules of thumb every science goes by which are: clearly defined terminology, quantifiability, highly controlled experimental conditions, reproducibility, predictability and testability.
It was under the most delicate of circumstances, when I realized what I was born to do for the rest of my life. It was march 2007, my grandfather was suffering from pneumonia and due to his deteriorating condition he was hospitalized. I had flown in from Toronto to be by his side. Sitting anxiously by his bedside with tears in my eyes wondering if I could do anything to make my grandfather feel better, I watched doctors come and go , updating us on his blood reports, EKGs, chest x-rays, ABGs, and at the same time constantly counseling my concerned family members. As they explained what they were doing to bring my grandfather to the path of recovery, I watched in utter fascination.
I am studying a Psychology degree and this field I have chosen really interests me because I have a passion for helping people. Generally, I am that type of person to put other's happiness and well-being before my own, because it makes me feel like I have a sense of purpose. Also, since I was a little girl I have always been so fascinated with the way people interact, behave, think and feel. I always asked 'why?' and I still do to this very day.

Ever since I can remember, I have always been interested in psychology. It has caught my attention because the human brain is one of the most unknown, complex and unanswered subjects. My school never taught this subject, so I have always relied on the internet for information. I have tried to learn as much as I can about psychology and the human brain, yet was never able to find rich information. I look at psychology as a necessary tool in understanding people, whatever situation you may be in.

Are psychology research findings valid? I returned to school in the early 2000’s to change careers for one last time and revisit by interest in psychology. Planning on getting post graduate degrees, it was advised that I return and take the psychology undergraduate requirements again, as things had changed significantly in the field since the late 60 and early 70’s that had been the setting of my last foray. Being more mature, and experienced in administration and management, a few of my professors encouraged me to assist them in studies they were conducting. This was both flattering and interesting and my early inclination was to directly pursue a PhD after completing the undergraduate requirements.

Dealing with such, there are opportunities to witness different cases that cause some questioning on how it can be fixed. Whether to help their own client or have an effect on the world, studies are conducted to prove and cure. With my dreams to work in the psychology field, I will have to be aware that the possibility of forming an experiment that can result in being controversial is likely. While enjoying helping people mentally and emotionally, I do not want to harm them in any way, especially when my experiment is set out to prove a major problem within society.

Although, there may be subcategories within, there is seven major categories for contemporary perspectives in psychology: Behavioral, psychoanalytical, humanistic, cognitive, evolutionary, biological, and sociocultural. Although perspectives may be intermixed between multiple different groups, current psychologists devise their theories of the basics of these major perspectives. Being a health and fitness enthusiast I have always been interested in learning about how the mind works physically and emotionally, and in what ways the body reacts to various mental states is very intriguing. That is why I want to explore the mind and the essence of the human condition. We all question or try to make sense of our life; I believe that through its many perspectives, psychology has those answers. Psychology is accessible because not only is it a scientific study of thought and behaviour, it is also an art that can be applied by the individual to everyday life. I also believe we are all psychologists attempting to understand other people and ourselves.

Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life.
