In this global world we live in today, studying abroad allows students to explore new horizons and learn about different cultures. I am applying for the Gilman scholarship in order to participate in the USAC Seoul, Korea Yonsei university study abroad program. I am an international relations major with a focus in the South East Asian region. A goal I have for the future is to work as an ambassador for the United States at an embassy in South East Asia. This program will play a big role in my decision to work in Korea as well. Studying abroad in South Korea will give me experience living in an Asian country, and an understanding of customs and social norms there as well. The reason I chose this program was because of my interest in the South East Asian region, South Korea in particular. Over the past 3 years I have studied the Korean language independently because of the lack of Korean language courses offered at my university. Studying in Korea will give me a chance to not only further my language studies but also a chance to interact with native speakers. I have always been enamored with Korean culture and I would love being able to immerse myself in it. The way Korea has preserved its past alongside their rapidly modernized society is astounding to me. I think the people in Korea have a great appreciation for their history and a great pride in their country. I love the historical mix with a modern twist that is common in Korean cities. Also, Yonsei's prominent reputation as an Ivy league university of the east is another reason why studying abroad here would be such a great opportunity. As one of South Korea's SKY universities, I have no doubt that Yonsei will provide me with the best education I can ask of an exchange university. I chose an entire semester to study abroad because I want to immerse myself and truly absorb the Korean language and
