Tupac was shot, “Big Frank” was guarding him at a Mike Tyson fight. Orlando Anderson, a member of the rival gang, the Crips, was also there. Anderson was said to have “beef” with several of the Death Row members. Tupac attacked him on sight, knocking him down and punching him. Source Frank swears that the fight between Tupac and Orlando Anderson was the cause of the rapper’s shooting later that night.
One of the biggest names in hip hop was killed in the 90s. Tupac was shot while in a BMW on the way to a nightclub, after a fight at the MGM Grand on September 7, 1996. The event is still controversial to this day. There are many different views of Tupac Shakur’s shooting; most of the views come from fan’s, friend’s, or federal agents or cop’s perspectives.
Notorious BIG was, in fact, the king of the East Coast and with his major appearance on the rap scene, inevitably created a rivalry between East coast and West coast hip-hop factions (“Notorious B.I.G” 1999). This feud was further fueled on November 30, 1994, when Shakur was robbed and shot four times, Biggie was accused of being involved yet there was no evidence. In retribution, the two rappers continuously exchanged disses, that eventually got too personal, including the claim that Tupac slept with Big’s Wife, singer Faith Evans (“Notorious B.I.G” 2011). Subsequently, in 1996 Tupac was shot and killed, this was the start of a war between the two factions, that neither of the sides was ready for. Many believed that Biggie and Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs were responsible for this murder, but all claims were denied.
The deaths of Biggie and Tupac illustrate the tragic consequences of coastal rivalry. Theories abound over who killed them and whether Tupac's death was faked for safety, but the murders remain unsolved. Biggie was working the streets next to his mother's apartment on St. James Place.
