Exposing Children to Painful or Uncomfortable Literature 3,362 books were banned during the 2022-2023 school year, with books from Nobel Prize winners too many talented authors. But why not? These books commonly share uncomfortable literature. Banning books that are painful can limit children's choices and prepare them less for real life. It is crucial to let children read books that may be harsh to them because it is important to experience all forms of opinions and information to better understand and decide on the future. Hiding literature that can be rough for children can have terrible effects on their health. Avoiding these books can create this feeling of escape, and/or happiness. Education is built in an effort to improve the quality of choices, making it available to all students. The National Council of Teachers says that denying their "freedom of choice in fear that it may be unwisely used is to destroy the freedom itself" (NCTE). English teachers are pressured, sometimes forced into a position of lying to their students about the real state of humanity and nature. Kids should be exposed to the real world, where people speak crudely. Not everything is as sweet as it seems. Author Kurt Vonnegut admits that “some of the characters speak coarsely, but that is because people speak coarsely in real life” (Vonnegut). Letting children read uncomfortable literature prepares them for what's really to come in the future. Vonnegut also mentions that allowing children to read painful pieces of literature helps ensure they are “better equipped to decide, and to survive” (Vonnegut).
