Does Your Major Reflect You?
A person should involve themselves in a discipline that is reflective of who they are and the life events that have helped shape them. When a major is declared, a person should choose something that they are passionate about and love to do. Upon entering college, I automatically knew that my field of study was going to be Early Childhood Education. However, education is not a major everyone can do, and only people who are passionate about the profession should partake in as a career. Neil Pedersen, superintendent of Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools stated, "Great teachers love what they do and perceive teaching as their calling…They are willing to do whatever it takes for every student to be successful. Some of the reasons why people may say that they would never be a teacher is because teachers do not make much money. The idea that educators are underpaid for the job that they do is often expressed. One opinion about this issue comes from Justice Bealle, a writer for the Odyssey Online wrote, “Although pay is a huge issue in the world of teaching, it is not the reason teachers do what they do.” Bealle’s statement is true money cannot be a factor when making the decision to go into the discipline because becoming a teacher takes dedication, patience, and a caring personality. So, without those things a person would not be a successful teacher. Numerous people may feel that the field of education is a discipline that is not represented enough in society today.
