I am most attracted to Loma Linda University’s mission to make man whole and continue the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ and its commitment to faith and science. As a Seventh-day Adventist christian, the motto to make man whole has never been more personal than it is now. As I grow in my experience as a christian, to further the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus continues to take center stage. This mission and an understanding of the need for whole person care is something I seek to demonstrate and encourage through my profession as a nurse and involvement in my community.
For the last two summers I have worked at the Legal Aid of North Carolina alongside lawyers who provide legal representation for low-income residents throughout the state. Although these lawyers receive little recognition, their work is necessary for the greater good of the state. Recently, I have learned that the Legal Aid foundation is to receive funding cuts that will result in major layoffs and a siphoning of resources away from the residents of North Carolina, who would be unable to afford legal representation otherwise. Witnessing the works these lawyers have done has reinforced my passion to become a public interest lawyer in the state of North Carolina. I want to provide a voice for marginalized groups to ensure equity in the justice system.
My path to law school has began in my sophomore year of college, now I am ready for the challenges ahead with an eagerness to learn. I have discovered over the years that I embody the unique combination of activism, diligence, and courage beneficial for a legal career. I originally had an interest in pursuing a law degree as a student in the School of International and Public Affairs at Florida International University. At the time, I chose to major in criminal justice with the intention of becoming a defense attorney. However as I neared graduation I was not certain about a career as a defense attorney.
Throughout middle school, I developed a strong interest in law, which I never lost. Because of this, I began doing extensive research on the qualifications and prospective career pathways in law, and this sparked my interest in becoming a City Attorney. Due to my growing passion, I started taking several classes through the Northwest Iowa Community College to get a jump start on my education. Since then, I've studied a variety of psychology courses along with others like Social Issues, Introduction to Political Science, and Introduction to Criminal Justice. These classes have taught me an immense amount about our political systems, and I will be able to apply my newly-found knowledge in my future endeavors.

What interests you about your selected program of study? Computer science has always been the aspect of study that has grabbed my attention from a young age. CS always created a sense of awe in me because of the fact that individual people, with a firm understanding of CS, could completely manipulate technology into whatever creation they wanted. In the same way an artist can paint on a canvas, computer scientist can create through code and each program carries a sense of the programmer with it. The more you learn about CS the more uses it gains, making it a tool that builds upon itself.
Through pursuing a Master of Arts in Psychology from Rutgers University, I want to be challenged. I would like to focus my core courses towards the field of language and neuropsychology through Developmental, Abnormal, Cognitive, and Physiological Psychology courses. I hope to gain classroom experience when taking Teaching in Psychology and through pursuing the thesis track, I hope to work with Dr. Bill Whitlow. I would be interested in working with Dr. Whitlow for his background in psychobiology of learning. Along with this, Dr. Whitlow’s interest in topics such as the evolution of cognition and metacognition are things I find interesting.
Personal Purpose Statement: Due to my experience in the Smith School of Business, there are some slight changes that I would make to my personal purpose statement (See Appendix A for original personal purpose statement). This is that I now know what I have to do to thrive at Smith School of Business. This is to develop myself socially and intellectually. Thusly, I can combine the two pieces together. My mother's side of the family is Episcopalian, but my father, an agnostic, always taught me to be skeptical. Thus, I didn't really take Christianity seriously until junior high, when I received an introduction to Christian theology, the Trinity, and God's plan of Salvation. This happened due to my involvement in the AWANA program, which is focused on Biblical study and memorization. Through my constant study of scripture, I became enraptured with the message of the Gospels, and with the promise of forgiveness and transformation through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Writing is an aspect of English that has been an ambivalence within my writing journey. Growing up, I had mixed assumptions about writing. How can something like writing, which has been displayed as something that allows someone to express ideas, and increases creativity give mixed assumptions? The problem arose from strict guidelines that demolished creativity and the freedom to express my ideas. In grade twelve, my law teacher gave our class an assignment which was to write an essay on a Canadian law that we would want to remove.
Education is such a powerful essential to life and it has become an extreme privilege that not everyone can be granted with. I have been lucky enough to receive outstanding educational experiences and there are two specific events that have completely affected my educational performance: becoming a resource helper in an autistic classroom and being on yearbook staff. After being a part of those two events, my entire perspective on education has shifted focus and now I clearly see what a blessing my educational career has been.
