Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky (McPherson 1). Lincoln was a son of two farmers, making him a part of a poor family. He went to a small school for only short amounts of time, making it hard for him to be intellectual in his childhood (McPherson 1). Throughout most of his childhood, his family moved around to many different places. Each time they moved, they always ended back up on a farm, making him very knowledgeable about farming and splitting wood. Lincoln was most famously known for splitting rails for his father and many other farms until he got involved with politics (McPherson 1). In August 4, 1834, Lincoln won the election to first term in the Illinois House of Representatives (Basler 1). He resided in the Illinois House of Representatives for a long time before he would become a part of the national level. “In December 6, 1847, Lincoln [took] a seat in U.S. House of Representatives” (Basler 1). Although he only held one term, this made his fame rise and he became more popular. Because of his popularity, he decided to take advantage of his national audience and speak out against slavery. Some of these speeches include his Peoria Speech in October 16, 1854, his House Divided Speech in June 16, 1858, his Cooper Union Address in February 27, 1860, his Farewell to Springfield in February 11, 1861, and his Address at Independence Hall on February 22, 1861 (NPS 1). In his speeches, Lincoln presented topics such as abolishing slavery and important topics in that time. After all of this Lincoln finally ran for president in March 4, 1861 (Basler 1).
