According to the National Institute of Health, “Intrinsic motivation is defined as the doing of an activity for its inherent satisfaction rather than for some separable consequence. When intrinsically motivated, a person is moved to act for the fun or challenge entailed rather than because of external products, pressures, or rewards' ' (Oudeyer P-Y, Kaplan F). AdvoCare works with intrinsic motivation by having their customers feel more energized, helping them improve their overall health, and guiding them to feel accomplished for following through with a program built to help them improve themselves. Through the scope of extrinsic motivation, according to the National Institute of Health, “ extrinsic motivation is defined as being motivated for instrumental value or doing something because it leads to a separable outcome” (Oudeyer P-Y, Kaplan F). AdvoCare operates as a multilevel marketing company. This means distributors earn commissions for selling products and recruiting new distributors and clients. However, Advocare has faced several lawsuits in the past couple years. One of the claims is that advocare operated a pyramid scheme and made misleading claims about the income that the different distributors were making when in fact, most distributors were losing money. This lawsuit also alleged that Advocare incentivized distributors to recruit new distributors rather than selling to retail customers. This contradicts the mission statement of AdvoCare, which states that they look after all of their customers, and not just incentivising their distributors. Lastly, it was found that clients were pressured to become a distributor to ensure they would receive discounts. However, these discounts were discontinued unless these distributors found new distributors. Which is an aggressive tactic and a way to focus on recruitment instead of product quality. When looking at the accused, AdvoCare did go to court where they were found guilty of operating a pyramid scheme and were ordered to give up $150 million to a class-action lawsuit and promised to give up their multi-level marketing business model (Vedova H, Gressin S, Fair L, Atleson M).
