INTRODUCTION
Our world has been growing rapidly with technology and we are always looking further to expand ways to communicate. The first internet based social media to be recognized was Six Degrees, created in 1997. It allowed users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. It might be that social media is beneficial as we can communicate with friends and family members of long distance. However, we need to be aware of how it’s affecting us. With something so versatile and accessible, social media is in our faces every day. Studies show that 63% of Americans log on to Facebook daily and 40% log on multiple times each day. An organization called Enough is Enough, which deals with internet safety, conducted a survey that found 95% of teenagers who use social media have witnessed cyberbullying and 33% have been victims themselves.
Amanda Todd case
In October 2012, A girl named Amanda Todd, who lived in British Columbia, posted a youtube video which had been viewed by 17 million people. The title says it all; “My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self-harm” She uses flashcards to tell viewers about her life and experiences of bullying and being blackmailed. just over a month after posting the video, she committed suicide on October 10, 2012; She hung herself in her home. In seventh grade, Amanda started using video chat to meet new people online, however, one day she encountered a man who asked her to show her breasts on camera. The stranger blackmailed her and used the photos to his advantage. Soon, the photo was circulating the web, in fact, it had been on a facebook profile photo. There are four stages and they can be achieved through social media and be affected negatively. Orientation is the first step. This phase allows individuals to make first judgments about a person through seeing and hearing. Seeing a profile picture online is comparable to seeing a person from across the room where when a person can decide if they are attracted to them. This first step happens on websites like facebook and it is what makes us click the “add friend” button. During the second stage - exploratory affective exchange- the pair becomes more comfortable and they express personal attitudes. Also, the interest of online behavior will kick in at this point. Public display of affection happens online. For example, “liking” pictures or status updates, posting pictures, or sharing inside jokes on a future partner’s wall and pokes let the user know that you have been looking at their web
