The University of Redlands aims to “create a campus that welcomes, values, and fosters diversity and inclusion” (University of Redlands). Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) training is conducted for all incoming faculty members to ensure a safe environment for everyone. The goal of the training is to set expectations and attitudes of the faculty, informing them what diversity means, and teaching skills necessary to execute the University’s D&I vision. After the D&I training, the faculty should be able to communicate and behave in a respectful, inclusive, empathetic, and non-discriminatory manner in the classroom and around campus. The consequences of such actions will be explicitly listed. Following this section of the training, faculty will learn skills on empathy, how to encourage minority groups, and treat everyone equally in all aspects of their job. “To make the strategy effective, leadership at every level must proactively endorse and show their support for D&I” (Fayad). The upper management should be in attendance to show the faculty their involvement, and set an example. Additionally, the CDI explains where their office is located, gives their office phone number and contact information, and expresses how they are available to help the faculty. Lastly, the instructor opens up the floor for questions. If the faculty is slow to ask questions, there will be an FAQ’s slide. An example is “What should I do if a student uses hateful speech in my classroom”? The instructor will go through these FAQs, review what was talked about in the presentation as a summary and review.
