Successful leaders are not created at birth. Knowing whom you truly are and what you want to accomplish will pave the way for creating the leader within you. Leaders vary in many ways, but one thing they have in common are the qualities that they possess. In this chapter, “Understanding the Basics,” Bennis expounds on these characteristics and enlightens you as to how a great leader is made. Just like the recipe for your favorite entrée, great leaders must have specific ingredients to get the job done. Writing about your thoughts and beliefs assists a leader with his invention. As Bennis stated, true leaders are self-made and not born into the world. (2009) The attention of a true leader is placed on all things possible, and he doesn’t stop until the vision is revealed. Being proactive, leaders look for solutions and see the glass as half full. Interestingly, leaders are identified as being once born or twice born. Gaining independence for once born leaders has been identified as surprisingly easy; whereas, a twice born leader has endured trials and tribulations throughout his life and pulls from within to gain independence and confidence. First, taking the time to look deeply within yourself and knowing who you are will provide the confidence and direction needed to move forward. Keeping a positive attitude and searching for opportunities to grow will also help as a developing leader. Being steadfast and not wavering from the goals and vision for the school keeps a leader focused on what is important and contributes to the leadership qualities. Staying true to one’s values and beliefs and overcoming obstacles are important to becoming a better leader. Reflecting on Bennis’s ingredients of leadership, many of them are currently being utilized, but knowing how to use them effectively will definitely improve leadership
