There are many animal rights groups in the world today, some of them include the ASPCA (American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals), HSUS (The Humane Society of the United States), and PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals). PETA sounds like a great group, at first (since they are for the ethical treatment of animals) until you dig deeper into their beliefs and interests. For instance PETA takes animals from kill shelters and puts them into their animal shelters, but if they don’t get adopted quickly, they get euthanized. Even though PETA claims that they are against kill shelters, they kill their own animals. PETA has also supported animal terrorist groups such as the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) and the ELF (Earth …show more content…

The ALF and the ELF are animal rights groups that commit criminal acts in the U.S and around the world to help save the animals. Both were established in Great Britain, but the ALF started first in the 1970’s and ELF is a relatively newer group getting started in 1992. They are the same, considering that the ELF branched off of the ALF, but the ELF focuses more on environmental issues rather than spending all their time on animal rights. The ALF is a loosely organized extremist movement committed to ending the abuse and exploitation of animals. (FBI) The ALF usually use direct action, meaning that they are trying to cause severe economic damage and loss to that company or business. Since they are blatantly attacking people and organizations they are registered on the U.S FBI terrorist list. In Virginia, PETA entered private property, stole the family dog that was supposedly being abused, put her into one of their shelters, and euthanized her that same day. PETA had made connections with people in that area, and knew all of the people and animals. When Maya’s owners were out of the house that day PETA made their move, trespassing on private property, to take her. They tried to lure her off the porch with snacks and treats, but the dog didn’t want to come off the porch to strangers, so they took matters into their own hands and went up and got her. (Why PETA Euthanizes) While the PETA van was in the area, they had also taken two kittens and three other dogs. When Maya’s family came home and noticed that she was gone, they checked their surveillance cameras to find a PETA van parked outside their house taking their loved family pet. They quickly called the PETA shelter hoping that she was there, just to find out that they had killed Maya the same day they had received her in the shelter. This family sued PETA for conversion, trespass, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In the end the court made PETA pay $500 for trespassing and conversion, little closure
