Animal Testing Persuasive Essay

684 Words3 Pages

For many years, different ideas have discussed about animal experimentation. Being used by scientists seems unethical and cruel to many people over the decades it has become more prevelant. In today’s science, many species of animals are used in scientific experiment in order to save human’s life. If you were taken to the hospital for dying, would you refuse take a drug that it was developed as a result of tests on animals? In this case, survival impulse will outweigh. What people must understand that animal experimentation is not related with pain should be more focused on the process and why it is done. People have mental and hereditary similarities with animals, so restricting the use of animals for scientific experiments would limit the …show more content…

A large majority of the society are not aware of the experimentation process, so they think that after animals suffer from extensive pains, they have vital diseases. However, there is something they missed that researchers do not harm animals while they are conscious because in science, there is also value which is ethic, and scientists have to respect that. Therefore, they use methods which are painless for animals. One of them is anesthetization. In science, the experimantal design causing minimal disturbance to the animals is always preferable. In today’s medicine, there are several ways of anesthetization, and most of them can be used for experimental animals not to suffer from pain. Only if when the unconscious animal is unable to obtain data, the animal use which is conscious. There are many precautions in laboratories that working on animals. Scientists are watching and controlling them 7/24 in the stage of alert. Moreover, the other method is euthanasia which means a death with the minimum pain and stress. In the article, ‘Recommendations for euthanasia of experimental animals: Part 1, author Close, Banister, Baumans et al, 1996, states ‘The primary criteria for euthanasia in terms of animal welfare are that the method be painless, achieve rapid unconsciousness and death.’ The statement reveales that when the level of pain or stress are likely to exceed the designated level, euthanasia takes …show more content…

To begin with, there are similarity between human and animal anatomy that cannot be ignored. For instance, the systems that are used to control gene activity have many similarities. Therefore, animals have three million building blocks, and just about the five hundred are unique to them. When it comes to protein encoding DNA, mice is very similar to the human. The protein encoding genes of mice %85 similar to human, so in this case, mice is a good candidate for animal experimentation. Secondly, animals are acting as model fort he study of human illness. Many symptoms of human conditions can be replicated in rats for example due to the similarity of genes. Scientists can now raise genetically degenerated mice called transgenic mice that carry genes nearly same to those that cause human illness. Likewise, selected genes can be turned off or made inactive, creating knock out mice which can be used to measure the effects of cancer-causing chemicals. All of these means an induced models in science. For instance, there exist an experiment which is surgery of the rat in its spinal cord. In the article ‘Complete rat spinal cord transection as a faithful model of spinal cord injury for translational cell transplation’ author Lukovic, Mocholi et al, 2015, states that spinal cord injury leads to neurall loss and there are no effective cure for the threatment of this situation, and also they say that complete spinal
