Danielle Torres English 111 Carol Kaiser March 23, 2017 Conservatives vs Liberals One of the most challenging topics to discuss amongst others is politics, followed by the differential values and beliefs creating our stance in the political spectrum. Conservatives, defined as an individual who upholds traditional views and values often stemming from religion, is typically sublabel under republicans. On the contrary, democrats are typically labeled as liberals, who tend to be open to new behaviors, and willing to discard traditional values. Conservative and liberal differences are demonstrated by the differing views on debatable issues such as abortion, the right to bear arms, same sex marriage, and the death penalty—due to their own foundational beliefs. Traditionally, based on the political spectrum, these beliefs are referenced as “left or right.” Liberals are represented by the democratic party and are often referred to as the left wing, Liberals tend to have an optimistic view and feel that the people should be free and able to pursue their own …show more content…

The gun control issue is as much about culture as it is policy. Neither conservatives or liberals can adequately understand the other’s view—nor does either side want to. Conservatives find that guns are a symbol of freedom for the individual—personal right for their own protection (Chemerinsky 485). Liberals view on gun rights are that the citizens do not have the right to bear arms, and that they should only be used for the local and federal government to protect people through the law (Chemerinsky 485). Further, liberals argue that the language of the Amendment is ambiguous, making reference to the right of contemporary "militias" rather than individuals to own guns (Stanley 1).
