Does a person feel safe with just the government protection? According to the gun control fact sheet from gun owners of America 2.5 million times every year, or about 6,850 times a day guns are used by citizens to protect a life. That is eighty times more often guns are used to protect lives than to take a life. Also 200,000 women each year use a gun to protect themselves against sexual abuse. With recent events, gun control is a subject of conversation among a lot of people. Gun control is not the answer to violence because it makes self defense and hunting harder, it’s our second amendment right, and criminals don’t consider the laws. Self defense and hunting are two legitimate reasons to own a gun. For years people have used guns to hunt for food and for self defense against criminals. Stricter gun laws causing a longer wait period have caused people using guns for self defense to be killed before getting to pick up their guns. Also, many of the traditional hunting rifles can be classified as an assault rifle because the size of their magazines. Our second amendment right states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” For generations the government has followed the bill of rights to protect the liberty of the people. Some states with stricter gun laws have higher crime rates, than areas with more lax gun control laws. The same way after self carry laws were passed crimes went down, in some states. Criminals have committed crimes in gun free zones, such as banks, schools, and airports. Pro gun control activists argue that stricter gun laws would mean less guns in the hands of criminals, and less gun related deaths, but if people truly want to commit a crime, they will find a way to do it.
