Arguments Against Standardized Testing

Standardized testing, yet any testing should have no correlation with personal intelligence or an IQ. Mr. Tait I am glad we can agree on that. Not everyone is capable of the same thinking skills but everyone is knowledgeable in their own way. Testing should not be looked at as “one size fits all” for students. These exams, such as SAT or ACT should not determine the success of the test taker. There are many valid points as to why standardize testing is not a beneficial way to measure someones intelligence. Individually students can get worked up over the stress of an exam which can majorly effect them putting the pencil to the test. Now a days students are compared to each other by numbers and whose smarter than who. This is based on the students average or an exam number. “There are also many ‘intelligent’ people, as measured by our schools, who have the historic indicators of intelligence, viz. a quickness of understanding and the ability to perform cognitively at a higher level but are painfully deficient in other aspect” (Tait 9). It does not show creativity or how well a person is organized. Testing does not prove how trust worthy or creative the student could be for a job opportunity. Standardize tests treats every student as if they came from the same background with the same education and thinking styles. It treats us as if we are identical. One student can be awful at reading comprehension which could cause them to have low test grades. However, the student could be fantastic at visual learning. What does that have to do with testing? Not everyone learns the same, not every student will be able to test well. Students with learning disabilities may struggle on a test even with special accommodations just because their brain works differently than others. They will work as hard, if not harder and study extra, but still not get that outstanding
