Asthma is known as a chronic, inflammatory lung disease. It can potentially be of genetic inheritance and/or environmental factors.1 Asthma can entail of many disturbances such as coughing, breathing difficulty, wheezing, and maybe even chest tightness.2 This disease state occurs in approximately about 25.7 million people in the United States, which is about 8.4% of the population.1 Furthermore, approximately 4,000 people died from asthma in 2009, and about 9 people due from this disease state each day.2

One way a patient with asthma can control asthma is by making an asthma action plan. Using your physician’s or clinician’s aid and counseling can also help with the controlling of asthma. Monitoring the conditions of asthma in someone is essential in successful management of the disease state. A patient with asthma and his or her clinician can make sure of the following: routine monitoring of symptoms and lung function, educating patients to create a connection between themselves and the clinician, being aware and controlling environmental factors and other health problems that contribute to the intensity of asthma (NHLBi). For acute bronchospasms, short-acting beta-2 agonist are the most effective medications. A patient can be prescribed an albuterol metered-dose inhaler.3,5 The dosage can be 2 inhalations of the 180 mcg every 4-6 hours as needed. Some patients can suffice with 1 inhalation of a 90 mcg inhaler every 4 hours. If a patient has severe asthma episodes, he or she can be recommended 4-8 inhalations every 20 minutes for up to 4 hours, and then after 4-8 inhalations every 1-4 hours as needed.3,4 Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are more useful if a patient is in need of a long-term control medication, such as fluticasone between 176-352 mcg per day in 2 …show more content…
