Live Oak Brewery is one of the many new breweries that have seemed to spring up around Austin, Texas. What Live Oak lacks in size, they make up for it in the quality of their service and beer. Many business cannot thrive on simply their product alone, but also because of the management of the company. Therefore, managers are somewhat one of the key elements for a business to either be successful, or a failure. One way the businesses can increase their management is by having a hierarchy surrounding the company. Another way is by simply finding a business model, and by following that model. Therefore, their hierarchy surrounding the company is going to expand to more than just a taproom, but will also include people that work in the warehouse. Thus, the top position of the company is most likely going to be the owner, or the president of Live Oak. This person typically does not handle the selling and manufacturing of the product, but will handled the much larger decisions that have to be made for the company. Below the president is the Vice-President and the financial supervisor. The vice-president’s and financial supervisor’s role is to simply talk to the layer below them and to condense all of the important information to tell to the president of the company. Below the vice-president and the financial supervisor, I have spit the layer up into three different categories: Warehouse supervisor, Taproom Supervisor and the Marketing Advisor. I split this layer up because all of these people tend to answer to the financial supervisor and vice-president. Furthermore, I split up the warehouse and the taproom supervisors because they tend to work with very different elements of the company. For example, one person works on actually creating the beer and canning the product, while the other focuses on ways they can sell the beer and how they are able to connect with their customers on an emotional level. For example, a great business model to follow for any business would be the Burns and Stalker model. This model basically states that there are two structures a business can follow, the mechanical structure or the organic structure. The first way is by following a mechanical structure. One of the main components behind the mechanical structure is that the work place is stable and never changes. Another concept behind the mechanical structure is that there is a low differentiation of tasks. This simply implies that each task is basically the same and are easy to control. Lastly, the mechanical structure also believes that the decisions for the company should not include the lower level individuals and is only reserved for the higher positions. On the flip side, the organic structure has an environment that is constantly changing and adapting to the work environment. Also, the tasks are much easier to differentiate and the decision-making process is centralized around the lower level employees. Therefore, I believe that Live Oak’s business strategy is using mostly the organic structure. I believe they are mostly following the organic structure because the company is constantly coming up with new ways to sell their product.
