SUBJECT: Career Fair – Cargill and Solvay Chemicals

The SDSM&T Fall 2014 Career Fair was September 23, 2014. The Career Fair is a biannual event sponsored by the Career Center where more than a hundred companies recruit for co-op and internship positions. The purpose of this memo is to provide you with background information on two of the companies that attended, Cargill and Solvay Chemicals, and to discuss my experience.
Cargill, Incorporated

Recently they partnered with The Forest Trust in order to advance sustainable palm oil. By doing this, Cargill committed to preserving the rainforest as well as respecting the rights of indigenous people and their communities.

An example job for chemical engineers within Cargill is a research engineer/process control engineer. In this job you apply process control, improvement and data analytics to improve the efficiency of industrial-scale agricultural and food processes while working with the R&D team based out of Minneapolis, USA. Key requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in chemical or mechanical engineering, five years of experience in a chemical manufacturing or process development environment, ability to work independently or in a team, good communication skills, and a willingness to travel.

Solvay Chemicals

Many innovations have been a success.
• Solar Impulse – a fuel free, emission free solar airplane capable of flying day and night.
• Govanil™ - a vanilla flavor that is more intense and allows for a lower use of fat and sugar in baked goods, chocolates etc.
• Solar Pond – a salt water pond that captures and stores solar energy.
An example of a job for chemical engineers within Solvay is a Chemical Process Engineer. This engineer acquires and interprets data in order to select the best process which meets safety, economic and industrial restrictions as well as assists in production startup in Solvay facilities. Key requirements include a MS or PhD in chemical engineering, good technical skills, good written and verbal communication skills, and being a self-thinker.
