According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 10,000 people were killed while driving impaired in 2010. Statistics say that it is averaged out to a death every 40 minutes. There are multiple causes to drinking and driving. More actions are being taken to prevent something worse happening. For instance, on certain occasions there are checkpoints available to make sure people don’t further their driving while they have been drinking. Drinking and driving is becoming more of a “popular” thing in the sense that more teens are doing it because their friends are doing it. It also has a lot to do with how the person was raised and how aware their family is about what they are doing when they go out. Psychological factors have a part in this, being that emotional and physical state of being can cause one to think that they are doing just fine enough to drive. There are different types of drinking and driving, for example you have “buzzed”

Whether its peer pressure to drink or peer pressure to do other things, in some cases they always get sucked into it. Majority of high school kids believe that if their friends do it, it’s okay for them to do it. For example, if you want to fit in at a party and be considered the “cool” kid, it is expected of you to drink with the others. Some kids believe that if their friend can handle drinking and driving so can they. Everyone’s tolerance level for alcohol is different from one another, and most kids don’t believe that. I have gone to parties where kids have said “if they can drive home after drinking, so can I” and it’s shocking how many people will just let them go. Sadly, trying to fit in is huge when it comes to teenagers and it is important that they learn at a younger age the dangers of driving impaired or driving with someone who is impaired.
