Classroom Management Philosophy

Over the past year, I have learned a great deal about who I am as a teacher. The education classes I am currently taking this semester have opened my eyes to several different classroom management styles, which are helping me understand what kind of teacher I aspire to. The well-being of each student is my first concern when it comes to teaching and preparing them for the real-world. Due to this, the way I manage my classroom is essential. While I consider students as equals instead of subordinates, I know they are still developing and need extra help learning how to self-discipline. I would set high expectations for my students, but in a fair and caring manner. I will work with the students to come up with rules and procedures that we all can agree are fitting and appropriate. I want my students to be carefree and able to enjoy a safe and structured learning environment. While I will support the students as they are emerging with their self-control, I will require them to be respectful and open to learning new things. I feel that I must be receptive to suggestions from students, guardians, and other teachers in order to improve my effectiveness. I encourage students to offer input on activities and lessons, because if I get feedback on my lesson plans, I have the opportunity to help the children who are confused. In order to manage a successful classroom environment, I must set clear and concise rules, explain procedures and maintain a healthy relationship with my students. When there are classroom disruptions it is important for the teacher to quickly and forcefully put an end to the interruptions. There are many techniques and strategies to use, however, I felt Kounin’s management model would best fit in with my kind of classroom style. His techniques and strategies positively influence student’s behavior while allowing the teacher to keep control of the class. A good way to get the children involved in the classroom is to start the year off with discussing class rules and consequences that are to be implemented for bad behavior. Managing the students would be much more efficient this way, because we are working together to create a better learning environment. Besides getting the children engaged in the class, I will also have more time to concentrate on developing lesson plans instead of dealing with disciplinary problems. Class routines are important, because it allows the children to have a clear view of what to expect so they can come to class prepared and ready to learn. I enjoy discussions and projects that allow students to interact with one another and collaborate. Communication is an important skill to have, and letting the students speak with one another will prepare them for future social
