Provide a one paragraph summary of the key points of the webinar. (About 200-250 words) The webinar, “Managing the Madness: Classroom Management for Middle Level Education,” which was presented by Jack Berckemeyer and monitored by Dru Tomlin addressed one way to be able to adequately manage a middle school classroom, the 3-5-3 plan (an intervention strategy). In addition to addressing and breaking down the 3-5-3 plan for classroom management, Jack Berckemeyer also addressed the motivating factors of students in the classroom, the reasons students interrupt the teacher, what triggers students’ attention, and how teachers often respond to interruptions versus how teachers should actually respond to students’ interruptions in the classroom. …show more content…

This made me think about the students’ social development and their desire for acceptance. Because students are more likely to disrupt class if they are unable to speak with their peers any other time of the day, the textbook says it is essential to “create small learning communities” or “give students ‘free time’” to allow the students to informally socialize in the classroom to support their social development (Powell, pg. 41). This will also help prevent students from disrupting the teachers’ instruction.
Connection 2 The second connection I made between the webinar and the material we covered in class is the idea that teachers can prevent classroom disruptions by making instruction interesting, relevant, integrative, and challenging. The presenter mentioned that, oftentimes, students create chaos in the classroom because they are bored, and this made me think about prevention through good instruction (Powell, pg. 281). The best classroom management is making sure your instruction interests and engages your students, preventing them from becoming bored.
