Learning Community Plan
My approach to designing a learning community is based on my belief that the classroom is a safe place for students to engage in meaningful learning and personal growth. With this in mind, my plans for building a learning community based on mutual respect will be constructed through every element within the workings of the classroom. I base my approach on several scholars’ philosophies, which when pieced together form a well-balanced and holistic practice.

Community Expectations
I believe setting classroom expectations begins by determining why we come to school in the first place. School is a safe place to learn and build relationships; as a class we have to understand this and be respectful of it.

I plan to send out emails and class newsletters regularly to keep parents in the know about their student’s learning. I believe if parents are involved in their child’s school, the child will have more support at home and the parent can help with any issues that arise. With this open communication with parents, and I can to notify parents about their student’s behavior (both positive reports and behavior that needs work) regularly. I want to create an environment where students are not and do not feel that they are being treated unfairly.In order to do this effectively, is necessary to learn about my students’ family backgrounds, their previous educational experiences, their culture’s norms for interpersonal relationships, their parents’ expectations for discipline, and the ways their cultures treat time and space (Weinstein Curran & Tomlinson-Clarke, 2010).

Beyond just learning about my students, I must incorporate what I’ve learned about them into our classroom. I want to create an environment where I can integrate the curriculum into my students’ funds og knowledge. I want them to be able to share their experiences and relate them to the material we are learning and create space where we can celebrate differences and learn from each other.

I can do this through multiple outlets: the literature I bring into the classroom, the conversations and questions I pose to the class, the way I interact with individual students, the way I encourage others to interact, and the overall instruction around our curriculum. By modeling this authentic respect and care for my students, I can encourage them to authentically respect and care for each other.
