Phase II: Communicating Expectations The physical layout of a classroom is important for efficiently managing a classroom but what is also just as important are the expectations you set from the very first day. In order for students to have a successful year, they must understand what you expect of them and also practice them. To make it easier to communicate my expectations, carefully planning out a system of rules and procedures for my students will help ensure that I set procedures that are easy for the students to understand. I am responsible to reach the needs of my diverse classroom while at the same time, evaluate my students and arrange appropriate materials for there learning. An approach I can use to develop my set of classroom rules is to have my students participate in setting the rules. According the Castle & Rogers (1994), creating classroom rules with students can be a meaningful experience that can establish a positive classroom environment. Rather than sending a letter home, it allows for a long face-to-face conversation in which parents and teachers can discuss a child’s progress. It gives the opportunity for parents to review what is being taught in class and to ask questions of what they can do to help their child at home if needed. In order to contact the parents of my students, I would use ClassDojo to be able to not only keep reports of my students that parents can see but to also send messages to parents to set up conferences if needed. Syllabuses would be sent home the first day with my information for them to be able to contact me. On there I would include my times of availability that would be after school hours which should help parents plan their meeting with
