Teaching Philosophy Statement

My mission as a teacher is to help students develop academically, mentally, socially, and spiritually as I teach with respect, patience, and the love of Christ. I believe that students should have freedom of choice but with structure and guidance. Students should be active learners but in a controlled and structured setting. A teacher needs to be a classroom director, and other times she needs to be a guide. I believe that education is critical to help students find meaning in life, and all students are active, not passive learners. Teachers need to provide experiences for students that replicate everyday life. The best way to prepare students for an unknown future is to equip them with problem solving strategies. I agree that the teacher’s role is that of advisor, guide, and fellow traveler. I disagree that a teacher’s role is that of guide rather than that of authoritarian and classroom director. In some cases, a teacher needs to be a classroom director, and other times she needs to be a guide. A teacher needs to be both a guide and classroom director but needs to find a balance between both. I also expect to involve students in problem solving activities in class and at home. Children need to be active learners outside of school, and parents should encourage active learning in the home. This supports a child to take the first step in finding meaning in his life. I expect to collaborate with parents in order to keep them involved and aware of the curriculum and methods used in the classroom. I will also provide problem solving activities for parents to do with their children at home. This allows a parent to partner in his child’s learning. I also expect to invite parents to meet at anytime to discuss any concerns and to view the students’ projects that line the classroom
