Follow Directions In The Classroom

All students must be taught how they are expected to behave in the classroom. Teachers must realize that students do not automatically know how they are expected to behave in the classroom, therefore, teachers must model, and practice expected behaviors for students. “The Canters say the most important rule is “Follow directions”.” (Charles, p.42). When the teacher has taught a specific direction they must remember to reinforce them regularly through positive repetition. The teacher must repeat the desired behavior, rather than correctioning the student who is not following directions. The Canters suggest using a discipline hierarchy system, that will list corrective actions for students, and the order in which they will be imposed throughout the day. Teachers must keep track of each of the students offenses each day in order for the discipline hierarchy to be successful. To make a discipline plan successful the teacher can't just read it aloud or display it on a poster, it must be taught to the students.
The most effective technique for responsible behavior by a student is verbal recognition. Students need to know when they are doing well in the classroom, verbal recognition comes off as personal to the student and genuine from the teacher. “Effective verbal recognition is …show more content…

Teachers are very enthusiastic about assertive discipline because it is teaching students how to behave responsibly. It also is very adamant on the support of teachers from parents and administrators. Preserving instructional time and dealing with students issues without disrupting the classroom is a key point to assertive discipline.
