When it comes to a classroom, the way the teacher manages it determines the outcome for each and every student. Generally, “the most important thing a teacher can provide in the classroom…is CONSISTENCY” (83). Students need a routine and structure that will never change because it gives them a sense of security that everyone needs. Not only is this consistency good for the students, but the teachers as well because it makes planning much easier on them. Consistency seems to lead to success for many students, especially the ones who have special needs and must have that structure in order to have success in their lives. It is also necessary to “maximize student learning” because that minimizes student misbehavior (99). By having students constantly doing something, it does not give them the time to act out or come up with an idea to disrupt the class. However, there were two points that every teacher must follow in order have a successful year and classroom. First a teacher must establish rules, but these rules must be short and sweet. Students are not able to remember a long list of rules and neither can the teacher. In order to guarantee students following the rules, keep them easy to remember and very general, this way they are umbrella terms and easy for students to follow. Second, discipline procedures need to be laid out and the consequences clearly listed in order. Students need to know that you mean business if something goes wrong, this also proves to them that you have a plan when something goes wrong.
