The hallmark of an effective leader is found in their willingness to lead by example and strive towards continual learning and improvement. My Coker story epitomizes the value of education and self-improvement that began with the college taking a chance on me as a young, single mother with only an associate’s degree nearly a decade ago. My employment at Coker encouraged me to continue my education through the Adult Degree Program and find my passion. It was here that I developed eagerness for knowledge that did not end with a Bachelor’s degree, but helped me to achieve a Master’s degree and begin pursuing a doctoral degree in higher education administration. At Coker my love of social sciences was piqued and my desire to share my knowledge with other through teaching was ignited. Amidst my teaching experience and courses in higher education I have cultivated myself to become an advocate for students by fostering a student-centered approach and active learning in the classroom, as well as becoming an advocate for social justice. An effective leader is not only likeable and inspiring, but also gives their attention to the needs of others and is willing to listen to their concerns. I find this is also the case as I counsel students and parents about financial aid. I have the financial advising skills and business minded orientation that is important for the success of the college, but also recognize that our stakeholders are real people that need personal connections. I have already been a part of the college as alumna, staff, and adjunct faculty, but would similarly enjoy contributing through my student-focused approach in a leadership
