After completing my first year of college at Heritage University, I felt so accomplished like I never have before. As I come closer to achieving my career goals, it brings me joy and excitement. I come from the small town of Wapato, Washington which has a high Hispanic population and not many go on to pursue a post-secondary education. My parents immigrated from Mexico to the U.S. so they can build a better life to raise a family. Their decision of immigrating to the U.S. came with many sacrifices. I want to honor my parents by pursuing a higher education and not let their sacrifices be in vain.

Every effort I put into my education is done with a great purpose. I strive to earn excellent grades either by staying up late to study, managing to pull through heavy assignments, or spending hours studying for a class. My hard work and dedication pays off in how excellent my grades are. My parents have encouraged me to pursue a career not for financial benefits but for the impact I can make with it. I strongly believe teachers make a strong influence on students. I hope to become the kind of teacher that students will proudly say “Because of Ms. Ruiz I reached my goals”. I especially hope to impact migrant students who often face difficulties in their education, to never give up on their goals despite the barriers. Being a CAMP mentor (College Assistance Migrant Program) allows me to guide students through their first year of college. I enjoy working with my mentees because I see how much they have grown as college students. The students I work with are also first-generation and the dedication to pursue their career amazes
