My purpose in seeking a PhD is to further my education so that I can pursue a career as a professor. Teaching is an important focus for my future because I want to help people and I have always loved learning. Thus, when I realized that not everyone loved learning the way that I do, I knew what I wanted to do in life. My convictions were reaffirmed repeatedly when I discovered that many people struggle to learn or even have no access to education whatsoever. When I became a tutor several years ago, it felt as if my all hard work was finally paying off. It felt like the perfect sort of work for me and I have been tutoring varying subjects and levels ever since.

It was my first time abroad and although I was only there for one month, it changed my perspectives and improved my research skills exponentially. The short term and immense amount of learning and travelling provided the sort of rigor necessary for any student to determine if they were ready for graduate school or not. There was no time for me to doubt myself, to procrastinate, or to submit subpar work because there was no chance to redo the work for a better grade. My MA program was like that on a much larger scale.

During my MA, ECU pushed me to be the best professional I can be in a way that cannot be fathomed in an undergraduate setting. The English department awarded me a competitive assistantship to work with the University Writing Center and to serve as a teaching assistant to the Introduction to Literary Studies courses. In these positions, I often acted as liaison between students and professors, suggesting solutions that satisfied both sides or fostering communication between the two.
