My first year has been filled with all sorts of feelings and emotions. From beginning to end, I feel like I grew both as a student, and as a man. College is quite unique in the sense that its portrayal to society is much different from what it actually is. I have learned a lot through my academics here at The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. However, the learning did not only take place in the classroom, but also other areas around campus in more social settings. As I look back and examine myself, my thoughts, and my actions as a high school senior to a soon to be sophomore college student I can see and notice clear differences. This job is quite demanding at times, but is also very rewarding. As an Events Assistant, I have worked concessions, performed turf athletic field maintenance, conducted halftime activities, sorted and filed financial papers, supervised events and facilities, etc. The rewarding part of this job is seeing how efficiently our athletic events are run. I have been told by many how good of a worker I am, and how SJU is so happy to have me represent them. When I am told these things, it makes me feel very important and it gives me a sense of belonging to something that is much bigger than myself. Another rewarding aspect about working in the SJU Athletic Department is seeing the strong alumni network that attend our events on a regular basis. Also, with the building of the new facilities, we got first-hand access to the dome, and the golf center. The topic of labels in society has opened my eyes to a countless number of stereotypes that we sometimes subconsciously put on people. This plays into our school, state, country, and even our world. We truly live in a diverse world, which is quite an awesome thing. Another lesson that I have learned in this class is how to make connections. Making different things relatable makes everything seem much more tangible, and easier to understand. Making connections is vital not only in the classroom, but also out in the real world. Making connections will help me better understand difficult concepts or situations, and will allow me to personalize those situations. Without this class, I do not believe that I would have broadened my views. Coming from a small, white community in central Minnesota, I have never had first hand access to cultural diversity like I do here at CSBSJU. I have learned that it is ok to be different, and everyone should be accepted to matter what their culture or skin color may be. Overall, I have grown substantially, which makes me feel really proud of myself after my first year. I believe that I will continue to grow as a student here, which will help me better prepare for my life when school is over. I am extremely grateful to be able to attend CSBSJU and learn lessons that will forever be a part of
