Being in the historic city of Edinburgh while maintaining high international prestige in the academic community, the University of Edinburgh has a unique combination of tradition and innovation – a combination that I am honored to have the opportunity to apply to be a part of. Throughout my life, I have always balanced dual interests in the old and the new, in the historic and the cutting edge. To explore these interests, I am majoring in physics while also taking classics courses and planning to pursue a minor in philosophy at Trinity College.
Having the opportunity to attend the University of Edinburgh for a semester would grant me the privilege of further indulging these interests. The city of Edinburgh and the surrounding lands of Scotland are steeped in a history and tradition as rich as any in the world, and the University offers courses such as Astrophysics and Scottish history classes that are not available to me at my home institution of Trinity College. As courses regarding the study of space and of the stars are offered rarely at Trinity, the opportunity to take advantage of the Institute for Astronomy and visit the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh would provide crucial …show more content…

I have taken and successfully completed all the physics courses for which I had satisfied the prerequisites while at Trinity thus far. In addition to this, I worked over the course of two years (researching four-dimensional ultrafast electron microscopy and the compression of electron distributions) in a physics faculty member’s lab, and I have performed as a teaching assistant and laboratory setup assistant for several physics lab sections, all while earning placement on the Faculty Honors list each semester.
