What do you think of when you hear the words “college athletics”? Most people probably would say the NCAA, or March Madness, or College Football. These are all definitely part of collegiate athletics, however they make up a fraction of the beast that is the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA for short. If there is one word that has a huge connection to this topic it would be “money”. The NCAA is a money machine. This paper will dive into the debate that has been stirring up over the last few years now about whether college athletes in the United States deserve to get paid or not. From world sports like this article talks about and what we have discussed more in class to college sports, every network builds itself around these big sporting events. Using F1 as an example, “…with the rise to prominence of British driver Lewis Hamilton, average ratings for ITV1 steadily grew between 3 to 4 million” (in class reading). I use this as an example because it really shows how the sport matters to TV, back in the US, with the spike in play of college football and basketball, their ratings go way up too. If we connect this back to paying the collegiate athletes, we see that they are already on air so much and representing their schools so much. This is why I feel they need to be paid because they are what is driving ratings up and bringing money to media outlets, conferences, and back to their colleges. We talked a lot as well about the marketing of global high performance athletes but the same goes for the college athletes to a certain extent. Although they cannot have agents and receive money, they are still doing the best job possible for their schools and thus their schools and the NCAA need to pay
