Before the 1860s U.S. railroads were inefficient for big business to explode, and shipping goods wasn’t as easy before Cornelius Vanderbilt organized a steam ship company. He also controlled all lines of railroad linking New York to the Great Lakes. His strategy was to create a monopoly to gain wealth and power of all the effective railroad lines into one major company. He expressed competition and set unfair prices for the workers. The workers soon revolted and went on strike in 1877 due to the low pay and increase of work hours.
Plenary Keynote “On the Idea of a Christian College” - Dr. Timothy Larsen (8:30 session) “Knowledge is an end in and of itself” In this discussion, Dr. Timothy Larsen discussed the calling and the mission of a Christian liberal arts college and how a college like Northwestern allows us as students to connect our faith, purpose, intellect, and service. Throughout the speech, Larsen argued against the critics who believe that a liberal arts education is worthless and that students who attend such colleges are “being scammed” because they are taught things that they will never otherwise use in their careers and/or life. These critics of a liberal arts education do not believe there is a utility-maximizing point for the widened array of required subject study offered at a liberal arts college.
Not everyone has the privilege of becoming a Macalester student. The ones that do receive an amazing liberal arts education. I dreamed of attending a none community college school. Thanks to my learning disabilities it was never a possibility. Instead I thrived during my lone year at community college.
Education is a lifetime of learning and college education can be the most stressful situation in someone 's life. In the article titled, “What Is the Point of College?” by Kwame Anthony Appiah, (The New York Times, on September 8, 2015) Appiah exposes what college should be about. I believe that Cal Poly provides me with enough classroom opportunities to determine both what I can do and who I can be.
The positive environment encouraging students to strive for excellence with the help of amazing teachers at Mitty is what I am looking for. I am looking forward to my life at Archbishop Mitty and am extremely excited to be able to immerse myself in an elite education, while honing my skills in various co-curricular activities and helping the community. I have always believed in hard work and dedication, qualities which lay the foundation for success. This has reflected in my grades and achievements in elementary and middle school. Therefore, transitioning into a solid academic curriculum that Mitty offers will be beneficial to my education.
Two years ago, I started my journey as a student in The Dual Language Honors College at Miami Dade College, little did I know that this institution would give me so many opportunities to ascend to a higher level of competitiveness and adroitness. Miami Dade College is the unwavering foundation in my development as a professional and as a person. The college has instilled in me dedication to my community, self-confidence. Furthermore, the college and its faculty have always been the driving force that pushes me to set competitive goals and believe in the power of my dreams.
As the semester progressed not only did my grades improve, but also the relationships and tools that were presented to me by UT and the LBJ School. Previously, I have always been very involved, that is why at LBJ I joined the Graduate Public Affairs Council and briefly worked for the Center for Global Business at McCombs. What I have learned so far is invaluable to my future goals and success. I realize that I did not meet one of the requirements in one class, but I am certain that I will improve and exceed this semester’s performance in my next semester if given the opportunity to remain an active student.
For the past two years, I have been inundated with letters from colleges, which were excessive to the point of forcing me to throw away unopened, unread letters because I was too overwhelmed with the enormity of the decision that lay before me. But Oberlin has somehow mastered the art of informing without smothering. I was sent postcards about Oberlin that told me about life at Oberlin, and showed me the soul of the school. I felt that Oberlin genuinely “wished I was there”, and I began to wish I was there, too. So when I started seriously researching my options I realized that Oberlin College had a vibrant, diverse history department, a dynamic English department, and offered a concentration in education.
The liberal arts education that the College of Arts and Science provides offers unique opportunities to pursue interests that may not turn into a future career. The Achieving Excellence in Liberal Education curriculum at Vanderbilt University allows students to advance their knowledge in areas other than their major and provides them with an opportunity to be better equipped for future education or interests. I will embrace the breadth of courses offered by throwing myself into my education. With these core courses being required, it makes studying other interests accessible. For example, I can learn how to better understand myself through a creative lens while taking classes in an art class that furthers my education.
Many people say, "College is what you make of it." Drexel has so many opportunities to utilize my existing skills and talents as well as acquire new ones. As a first-generation American student, I plan to take full advantage of every opportunity and experience presented to me. Coming to a new group of people is always a little scary, but I am confident in my ability to bring diversity to the campus community and make a valuable contribution with a smooth transition into college. Personal attributes of mine that will aid in my contribution to the Drexel community are my leadership skills, initiative, commitment to service, and sense of social responsibility.
In conclusion Linus Pauling did not have the best childhood in the world. But, he did not let these unfortunate events cripple him. Overcoming all difficulties in his life Linus Pauling pursued his childhood love for chemistry and turned it into his adult career. His curiosity for chemistry and science in general resulted in him winning not one but two Nobel Prizes, that are unshared. Linus Pauling pursued his childhood love of science and in the end became a highly important figure in the science
After changing my major a couple of times, I decided to make History my major, which was originally my minor. After that switch I began to thrive, academically and personally. Queens College is my choice for graduate school, because it has one of the most outstanding History and Library Science programs I know of. With my determination and passion for the field I have chosen, I am prepared to gain as much credentials at Queens College. I hope to work along with Queens College faculty such as, Dr. Joshua B. Freeman or Dr. Kara Schlichting, since they have both studied the history of New York City.
In my short seventeen years, I have come to realize that life presents several opportunities at any given moment. I love to reach out and take advantage of these chances, but I know that a lack of success is quite a reality. I used to view this lack of success as a failure, but the lyrics “You only fail, if you never try” changed my perspective. I can learn from mistakes and the times I do not succeed. Today, I see only see failure if 100% effort and determination was absent and resulted in unmet expectations.
