The Debate on Common Core One of the biggest debates in Education right now is about the Common Core changes. The Common Core is described as, “a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade” (“About the Standards”). Forty-one states have adopted the Common Core standards. A lot of teachers, students, and parents have spoken out against the standards for multiple reasons, including high stakes testing, the initial struggle to adjust to the standards, and the increased rigor of the curriculum. These people claim that the Common Core standards do not help students more than previous standards have. However, an in-depth look at the standards themselves shows that they actually do benefit students. Common Core standards benefit students by preparing them for college and their careers. For example, students working together on a Biology lab are encouraged to talk to each other and finish the lab as a group. Working as a group daily helps students improve their communication skills, because they feel comfortable talking with other people in a work setting. Also, students who have to present projects in front of the class in science, english, and history become comfortable talking in front of audiences on any type of subject. In addition to pushing student performance, collaborative work, and teaching topics of interest, the Common Core standards encourage teachers to make lesson plans that focus on more than just test
